Soldiers' Monument on the Guilford Green
The centerpiece of the Green is the Soldiers' Monument. Of the 308 Guilford men who fought for the Union in the American Civil War, 62 lost their lives, and it was in their remembrance that the monument was commissioned. The pedestal's cornerstone, made of Leete's Island pink granite, was laid on Memorial Day 1877. Fundraising for the statue continued until 1887, when it was finally dedicated.
