1. The Builders Marker

Inscription.
The Newark Earthworks complex was built by the prehistoric Hopewell Indians who occupied central and southern Ohio between approximately 100 B.C. and A.D. 500. These people, supporting themselves by hunting, gathering wild plant foods, and growing some crops, built geometric and hilltop enclosures in the major river valleys of southern Ohio. While none of these sites have been completely investigated by archaeologists, they apparently were used for a variety of social, political, and ceremonial activities.

In addition to being skilled engineers and builders, the Hopewell Indians were also accomplished artisans. Using copper, mica, obsidian, and other raw materials imported from sources hundreds of miles away - as well as native Ohio stone and flint - craftspeople fashioned exquisite craved stone pipes, ornaments, and objects that probably served as status symbols. Some of these items are displayed at the museum in Moundbuilders Park.
