1. The Octagon Marker

View of the marker situated at the top of the observation platform.

Inscription. Within the octagon are 8 flat-topped mounds positioned just inside the openings between wall segments. Each one is 6 feet high, 75 to 90 feet long, and 40 to 60 feet wide. The function of these mounds has not been determined. However, they may have been visual barriers, blocking the view from outside the octagon.

Location. Marker has been permanently removed. It was located near 40° 3.191′ N, 82° 26.786′ W. Marker was in Newark, Ohio, in Licking County. It was on North 33rd Street near Parkview Road. This marker is located at the Moundbuilders Country Club, on a raised wooden observation platform, that is situated between the parking lot on the north side of the Moundbuilders Country Club, and the earthworks of the Octagon Mound complex.
