Broadstairs in Kent, England, United Kingdom — Northwestern Europe (the British Isles)
Viking Bay
| | Broadstairs Town Trail | |
In 449 AD Hengist landed in Thanes, and this early landing was commemorated in 1949 by a re-enactment in which Danes rowed a replica Viking Ship across the North Sea, landing at Main Bay in Broadstairs [renamed Viking Bay from this date onwards].
The Promenade
The Bandstand is in its third location, and was originally built to commemorate the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Victoria in 1887, as was the original Clock Tower built in 1901. A Napoleonic gun battery was located on the promenade. Dickens House Museum was home to Mary Strong, the inspiration for Betsy Trotwood in 'David Copperfield'. The Charles Dickens Public House was originally the Town Assembly Rooms.
Erected by Broadstairs Town Council.
