1. The Guilford Green as a Cemetery Marker
The Green served as a burial ground for the town's earliest residents. It is estimated that up to 1,500 persons were interred below its turf, giving particular meaning to the common Green as a sacred place.
Soon after 1825, the gravestones and monuments were removed by order of the selectmen.
