Chestertown in Kent County, Maryland — The American Northeast (Mid-Atlantic)
Sultana Education Foundation
The schooner Sultana is part of the larger Chestertown campus of the Sultana Education Foundation. Since 1997, the Foundation has provided award-winning programs in history and environmental science for tens of thousands of students, teachers, and outdoor enthusiasts.
School Programs
The schooner Sultana provides under-sail educational programs for more than 4,000 students annually. Aboard Sultana, passengers have a unique opportunity to explore the ecosystem and history of the Chesapeake Bay while raising sails, steering the ship, navigating with 18th century instruments, sampling marine life, and conducting tests to monitor water quality. Sultana's programs complement Maryland State Department of Education curriculum standards in social studies and science.
Summer Programs
During the summer, Sultana Education Foundation offers opportunities for children to explore the Chesapeake Bay aboard the schooner Sultana. These include multi-day live-aboard trips as well as day-programs on the Chester River. Summer trips on Sultana foster an appreciation of the Chesapeake while encouraging participants to learn new skills, make friends, and gain confidence in their own abilities.
Public Programs
The Sultana Education Foundation offers regular opportunities for the public to sail aboard Sultana. Suitable for ages five and up, passengers on Sultana's two-hour Public Sails help steer the schooner, hoist the sails, explore the crew quarters, and watch as the schooner's swivel guns are fired. Sultana is also available on a limited basis for charters and private events.
