Inscription. In 1993, the volunteer organization Victoria Avenue Forever undertook to improve a semi-abandoned plot on land on the corner of Victoria Avenue and Jane Street. The hardscape, irrigation system and plants were funded by donations, and VAF volunteers did the planting and maintenance of the garden. The garden is named after a longtime and well-respected physician in Riverside, Dr. Peter Lewis. His first wife, Lilla, was a member of the Irving Cage family that settled in Riverside in the 1880s. Early family members were involved in the design and construction of the Gage Canal and were also orange growers.

The Dr. Lewis Garden was designed by Rick Catron as one of the first "water-wise" Mediterranean-style plantings in the area. With something in bloom at every season, this garden provides a lovely stopping-off point for those using the Avenue. In addition to the informational kiosk, the park provides meandering paths for peaceful appreciation of the varied plants and trees.
