Inscription. This is the site of the South Chancel that was the focus of the archaeology excavation in 1981.

The chancel was built in about 1300 and had collapsed some 200 years later. Part of one wall remains as does the outline of the large East window.

The Victorian building that intrudes into this space was a classroom block for the St Bees Theological College that existed here from 1816 to 1895.

Although the Monastic burials investigated were expected, the discovery of a 14th century vault containing two bodies was not. One female skeleton lay beside the nearly perfectly preserved body of a man wrapped in a lead coffin.

The outline of the vault is marked on the gravel, a special position in front of the altar for two members of the local nobility.
