1. Lock 25 - Second Welland Canal 1841-1845 Marker

Inscription. Lock 25, constructed from locally quarried limestone between 1841 and 1845, is the only Second Welland Canal mountain lock in Thorold that remains visible today. Demonstrating its engineering and functional design, it is part of the built heritage and cultural streetscape of downtown Thorold as a reminder of the various Welland Canals' impact on the historic character of the community. The Battle of Beaverdams Park was opened in 1976 around the lock's remains, and hosts other Welland Canal and Thorold heritage assets, including commemorative memorials relocated from the historic 1813 battlefield site.

Foreground is the recess for the downstream lock gate door; the gate door hinge was located here. They left most of the lock chamber full of earth; this canal could handle boats of draft 3 metres (10 feet).
