1. The Syke Marker

Inscription. The Syke is a small stream which still runs westwards through Winckley Square towards the railway station before making its way to the Ribble near the bridge at Fishergate Hill.

In the eighteenth century it was an open stream with 'snipes seen flying along its sides', but soon became an open sewer as the surrounding town became more densely built up.

To deal with this problem, an underground tunnel of handmade bricks was built in the early 1800s for the Syke to flow through.

The steep valley in Winckley Square is an indication of the stream's original course.
