Wamsler Rock
This 500-million-year-old stone outcrop is made of gneiss and schist it formed as layers of sediment settled on an ancient tropical sea floor.
This large metamorphic rock outcropping formed millions of years ago from sediment deposited on an ancient sex floor. Creeping heaths, heathers and native grasses thrive in the crevices and thin soils around the rock. Heaths and heathers, both in the Ericaceae or blueberry family, are particularly adept at survival in infertile conditions like these. Heaths bloom in winter, while heathers bloom in summer, providing year-round color.
In 2007 this beautiful outcrop was named Wamslet Rock to celebrate the many contributions of Honore Thome Wamaler (1954-2004), whose leadership and passion for plants inspired the ongoing restoration of the New York Botanical Garden's landscape and loving plane collections.
