Solar Canopies
Rest in the shade and recharge your mobile device here.
In addition to providing shade, these structures will generate more than 5,000 kWh of power per yearenough to charge 500,000 smartphones. The canopies' fabric incorporates photovoltaic cells, which generate electricity upon exposure to sunlight.
This is a pilot project in partnership with Pvilion and the Innovative Demonstrations for Energy Adaptability (IDEA) Program, and initiative of the City of New York's Division of Energy Management. IDEA launched in 2014 to help the City reduce carbon emissions by engaging vendors to test new or underutilized energy technologies. This innovative design comprises eight canopy structures. Seven are tied to the city power grid, contributing directly to NYC's emission reduction. One of the structures is off-grid and feeds into a battery bank, helping to power NYBG as well as allowing visitors to charge small devices.
