Bronx River Soldier
John Grignola, sculptor, circa late 1890s
| | Preserving History | |
This granite statue represents the prototypical Union soldier, in military dress, with musket in hand. John Grignola (1861-1912) was commissioned originally to create this piece as a Civil War monument in Woodlawn Cemetery. Never placed there, it was bought by a local businessman and eventually displayed on a granite pier in the Bronx River, that once supported a causeway to a local tapestry factory. In 1964 the sculpture was topped into the river and recovered. It was installed in 1970 on the grounds of the Colonial-era Valentine-Varian House, where today is stands sentry next to the historic house museum operated by the Bronx County Historical Society.
