Village Life: Survival Strategies

Many changes in climate and water levels have occurred over the centuries, and human inhabitants had to adapt.
By the first century A.D., cattle had become an important form of wealth and currency in Africa.
As cattle herding became widespread, sustaining a livelihood became difficult for the region's hunter-gatherer populations, often called the Bushmen.
The thorny acacia shrub that thrives in the dry climate makes an esily constructed and effective fencenature's own barbed wire.
The wood growing in Xaxaba gives the villagers an opportunity to construct raised sleeping lofts that keep their children safe from wild predators.
