East Rock Restaurant built on the summit, in 1843, near the Soldiers and Sailors Monument. Years later it was destroyed by fire.

East Rock after the erection of the Soldiers and Sailors Monument in 1887. It honors the residents of New Haven who gave their lives in the Revolutionary War, the War of 1812, the Mexican War, and the Civil War. English Drive, a carriage road to the summit is visible in the foreground.
