1. Robert Peel Marker
Sir Robert was Prime Minister twice during the reign of Queen Victoria. He was highly regarded in Preston Because of his support for the Catholic Emancipation Act of 1829, and also for his role in the repeal of the Corn Laws which had kept the prices of grain and bread high.
This statue was carved by the local sculptor Thomas Duckett from a single piece of Westmorland Limestone and paid for by public subscription.
The statue stands on a plot of ground which was originally part of the garden of Alderman James German. It was unveiled by the Mayor Thomas Monk on 31 May 1852.
Monk's name was removed from the statue after he was convicted of forging a will in 1858. He was sentenced to life in prison but was released in 1868.
