Inscription. The "...most spectacularly sited of these Woodland sacred places is the Old Stone Fort." Ή

Flowing along this section of mound wall is the Little Duck River. The ceremonial enclosure intensifies the natural landscape; taking advantage of an isolated hilltop set apart by the two rivers. The setting led one prominent archaeologist to label this the "most spectacularly sited of these Woodland sacred places."Ή In the Woodland tradition of 2000 years ago, it was common for Americans Indians to incorporate natural features into the design of sacred sites. With the advent of the later Mississippian tradition, Native people would begin to build ceremonial landscapes in the flat, rich agricultural bottomland where they had come to live, creating sacred landscapes from a relatively blank canvas.

Water not only occupied a special place in the everyday life of ancient people; providing a source of fish and fresh water mollusks that thrived in the waters of the Duck River, but also served symbolic and ritual purposes in the life of American Indians. There is a tendency for water to be used to further set apart or enhance ritual enclosures.
