1. Grave of Eva Munroe Marker

Inscription.
Born February 7, 1856, Eva Amelia Hewitt Munroe, was the first wife of Commodore Ralph M. Munroe. In the fall of 1881, the young couple traveled from Staten Island, New York to Miami, Florida hoping the mild winter weather would cure Eva's tuberculosis. The effort was futile; while camping in a tent near old Fort Dallas on the Miami River's north bank, Eva died on April 2, 1882, and was buried nearby.

Munroe relocated Eva's remains to this site in 1885 after Charles and Isabella Peacock gave him four acres of land encouraging him to move to Coconut Grove permanently. Eva's gravesite is the oldest marked grave in Miami-Dade County. This plot became the corner of the Union Chapel and Graveyard which occupied the site for several years. When the church, renamed Plymouth Congregational, moved to a larger property, the gravesite was deeded back to Munroe and is still owned by the Munroe family. Munroe also donated land for the library and the current Woman's Club of Coconut Grove. In 1891, Munroe built his home, The Barnacle, now a Florida State Historic Park.
