Juan Bosch (1909-2001) is the Dominican Republic's best known writer. He is most famous for his short stories, though his work also includes novels and historical analyses. His courageous opposition to the brutal dictatorships in his homeland resulted in repeated exiles. During a brief period of democracy, he returned and was elected president, serving for seven months before being deposed. He is respected throughout the Spanish speaking world for his writing which links art and social responsibility, and for his advocacy of human rights.

Su valiente oposición a las dictaduras inhumanas en su país resultó en su exilio varras veces. Durante un período breve de la democracia regresó y fue elegido presidente. Después de sis meses fue derrocado. El respetado por todo el mundo hispanohablante por su obra literaria que une arte a la respónsabilidad social y por ser defensor de los derechos humanos.
