Shades Inn on Silver Street

Before the race moved to Outwood they were held on open land at the Ings, and many of the families of note in Wakefield and surrounding at areas attended the races.
The site also has wider historical significance. When the buildings were demolished workmen found some masonry below street level. After more exploration a massive stone doorway was discovered which might have belonged to a Manorial Prison of the Earls of Warenne which in turn gave its name to a nearby lane. According to author J. W. Walker's "Wakefield Its History and People" there was a Prison Layne in this area and there is some evidence to suggest that Prison Layne is now the well known Marygate area.
The Forgotten Women of Wakefield project is the creative mission of Dream Time Creative. The project seeks to empower the community and in particular the women's voice through the concrete goal of achieving Blue Plaque Parity for Wakefield's historical women.
With Louisa's Trail we honour Louisa [Fennell]'s life and legacy in the city she captured so beautifully in watercolour.
