Tree Progeny
| | Forest Heritage Trail | |
Forest tree improvement is by its very nature a long-term endeavor and requires a continuing commitment of resources to be successful....[it is] an investment that can pay broad dividends in forest adaptability and productivity in the face of dramatically changing environments and climates.
Paul Bloese, Tree Improvement Supervisor
Department of Forestry, Michigan State University
In 2021 and 2022, red pine trees were planted here and in the two plots to the west. They are part of a Michigan State University (MSU) 50-year genetic test using seed produced by 22 mother trees.
Seedlings (progeny) are genetically similar to their mother trees. Scientists monitor their growth to assess whether traits like height and diameter are influenced by genetics or the environment.
The Process
Foresters select seeds from good genetic stock to plant at nurseries. Once the seedlings grow enough, they will be transplanted into Michigan's state forests.
