Inscription. Health conditions in the 1800's were appalling. Germs and antibiotics had not yet been discovered. Deaths among mothers during childbirth, and infants and children were commonplace. Families relied on a strong faith in God to help see them through as evidenced by tombstone epitaphs:

"We loved this tender little one,
And would have wished her stay,
But let our Father's will be done,
She sleeps in endless day."
