Intersection of the centuries
You're standing on more than the junction of US Highways 50 and 285. This place where the Sawatch and Sangre de Cristo mountain ranges meet has seen many travelers over the centuries.
The Utes and other native peoples knew this area well, frequently camping at the hot springs. Five of the surrounding peaks honor their leaders.
Spanish explorers, French fur trappers and early American frontiersmen passed this way. Presidents, governors, sheriffs, outlaws, reformers and entertainers all left their imprints in the Upper Arkansas Valley.
Miners, railroaders, farmers, ranchers, and shopkeepers have left their marks as well. Those who stayed brought a wide variety of cultural traditions that shaped our growing communities.
Today's explorers continue to meet at the crossroads seeking adventure, quiet retreats or nature experiences. Others stop only briefly on their journeys in four directions.
Whatever brings you to the crossroads today, you're now part of the lineage!
