Cozy Dog Drive In
"The GI Hot Dog"
Enjoy the "original" deep fried hot dog on a stick. Ed Waldmire invented the Cozy Dog while stationed in Amarillo, Texas, during World War II. Originally called "crusty cur," the battered hot dogs were a hit with the GIs at the airfield. In 1950, the Cozy Dog Drive In opened on Route 66. Three generations of the Waldmire family have been serving their famous dogs here ever since.

·Returning home from the war, Ed opened his first Cozy Dog stand on June 16, 1946, at the Lake Springfield Beach House. Don Strand, a college friend, created the special batter recipe that would stick to a deep fried hot dog. A Cozy Dog sold for 15 cents.
·In the summer of 1946, Ed opened three Cozy Dog stands at the Illinois State Fair, promoting them as "the GI Hot Dog." They were a hit!
·Ed opened the Cozy Dog Drive In on 66 in 1950, just next door to your left. They shared the building with a Dairy Queen. Buz Waldmire, Ed's son, and his wife Sue built the current Drive In here, which opened in 1996.
·Ed's wife, Ginny, came up with the name "Cozy Dog" and drew the famous logo of two hot dogs embracing. The postcard above was drawn by Bob Waldmire, Ed's son, a well-known freelance artist who specialized in Route 66 scenes.
