Acquario Romano
Roman Aquarium
The idea of building an aquarium in Rome is credited to the pisciculturist Pietro Carganico.
The building, designed by Ettore Bernich (1845-1914) and inaugurated in 1887, was intended to be an aquarium, a fish farm and a meeting place for the bourgeoisie of the new Esquiline district. The building consists of a cylindrical body with an elliptical base and a forepart with a recessed arch accessed by two flights of stairs. Through the atrium, one enters the central hall, characterised by a particular decorative richness. The hall is marked by a double row of cast-iron Corinthian columns supporting the upper gallery and the ceiling, while a double Corinthian order of semi-columns and pilasters runs along the perimeter walls, in which spaces for the baths were located. Interior and exterior decorations are inspired by the theme of water. The roof was replaced in 1930 with the current structure that follows the dodecagonal profile of the large skylight.
Mura Serviane
Servian Walls
Remains of the Servian Walls can be seen in the gardens of the Roman Aquarium in Piazza Manfredo Fanti, a few steps from Termini station.
These walls are a fascinating remnant of the city's glorious past. Built to defend Rome from its enemies, the Servian Walls spanned a perimeter of around 11 kilometres, encompassing seven hills. The section in Piazza Manfredo Fanti, which is around 1.80 metres high and around 3-3.50 metres thick, offers a fascinating insight into the Roman defence system.
