1. Drummond Hill Cemetery Marker

Inscription. Established around 1795, Drummond Hill Cemetery is among the oldest and most historic burial grounds in the Niagara Peninsula. Here rest many of Niagara Falls' pioneer families and early community builders, including United Empire Loyalists and early Black residents. Among the notables buried here is Laura Secord (1775-1868), "The Heroine of the War of 1812". Another significant gravesite is that of Burr Plato (1833-1905), born a Black slave in Virginia, who later served as an elected councillor in the Village of Niagara Falls.

The Cemetery's name honours Lieutenant-General Sir Gordon Drummond. He commanded British and Canadian soldiers and their Indigenous allies defending this site against invading American forces during the Battle of Lundy's Lane, 25 July 1814. Ending with an American withdrawal, the Battle was one of the most stubbornly-fought and bloodiest during the War of 1812-14.

In 1895 the Dominion of Canada erected an imposing monument to commemorate the Battle and honour those who served and those who lost their lives in the conflict. This battlefield area was designated a National
