A viewing gallery would have been in use from the early 1600's.

The gallery enabled the owners of Wingfield Estate to keep an eye on the activities of the sugar works down in the estate yard. Up to the 1930's, the view of the estate was unobstructed. The trees you see have grown in modern times.

The estate would have been a hive of activity. There would have been many signs to be interpreted by the owner. He would have interpreted comings and goings of: cane carts, smoke belowing from the chimney stacks, barrels being transported to the shoreline, water wheel turning--------- etc, etc.

Erected by Wingfield Estate.
