Gladys Hampton Building. . This is the site of the first house in Texas owned by Sam Houston. The building was built in 1891 according to tax records. It was used as a hotel with furnished rooms beginning in 1910. It was officially shown as the Liberty Hotel with 75 rooms for rent on those records from 1925-1951. In the 1960s, this building was used as apartments. The City purchased the Old Liberty Hotel in 1967. The building was renamed the Gladys Hampton Building on November 5, 1974, in honor of Gladys Viola Hampton. Mrs. Hampton became a teacher in the Nacgodoches area after graduation from Stephen F. Austin State University. She was affiliated with the Texas Department of Public Welfare for 30 years and served for many years as the department's regional director. She was very influential in having the office located in Nacgodoches. Mrs. Hampton died in Nacgodoches on November 25, 2000. . This historical marker is in Nacogdoches in Nacogdoches County Texas
