1. A View in Time Marker
Natural and cultural forces reshaped the landscape through plant succession and human development.
Small changes had dramatic effects over time. On a daily basis the movement of the glacier was often unnoticeable As the glacier sets, Mendenhall Valley was covered and access for visitors increased. Wind-borne seeds and spores slowly caponized the exposed soils in the area. The view changed as larger plants succeeded low growing forms The mountains provided recognizable and unchanging backdrop.
Today visitors continue to be drawn toward the head of the valley. A shelter built by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) in 1937 stands along the trail ahead, inviting you to pause. What will this area look like in another 50 years.
