The East German border installations ran right behind the Reichstag (now the German Bundestag) and up to the River Spree, where the Gedenkort Weiße Kreuze (white crosses memorial) is located. It commemorates people who died trying to flee from East to West Berlin. The two Bundestag buildings, the Paul Löbe Building on this side of the river, and the Marie-Elisabeth Lüders Building on the other, were designed as a functional and aesthetic whole that would architecturally bridge the gap between the two, formerly divided, parts of the city. This was made possible by German unification in 1990. The Marie-Elisabeth Lüders Building contains the Berlin Wall Memorial.
