Mr. Gorbachev, open this gate!...Tear down this wall!

Here on June 12, 1987, Ronald Reagan, President of the United States of America, challenged the Secretary General of the Soviet Union Mikhall Gorbachev to demonstrate the sincerity of his country's desire for peace by opening the Brandenburg Gate and tearing down the Berlin Wall, Two and a half years later, on the evening of November 9, 1989, the world watched in amazement as the people of East Germany poured through the openings in a Wall which had effectively ceased to exist.
