Urbana in Champaign County, Ohio — The American Midwest (Great Lakes)
Pollinator Trail
Pollinators, which include honey bees, butterflies, bumblebees, hummingbirds, and beetles, are critical for the health of natural ecosystems as well as for our food supply. We enjoy the taste and nutrition of many fruits and vegetables, as well as of some nut crops, because of these pollinators. More than $16 billion of U.S. crop production in 2010 was attributed to insect pollinators, with more than $12 billion of that attributed to honey bees.
Major Problems Bees Face:
Malnutrition and undernourishment due to loss of habitats with diverse flower populations.
Pesticides that delay development, interfere with learning, and weaken immunity.
Parasitic, viral, bacterial, and fungal infections, which are exacerbated by the above factors.
What We Can Do To Support Pollinators:
Plant native wildflowers in backyards and schoolyards; along farmland boundaries, highways, and freeways; and wherever land is available for them.
Use natural forms of pest control.
Preserve wild habitats.
Create pollinator-friendly areas, which include a source of water along with wildflowers.
