Milton Outlier - Halton's Legendary Promontory
You are standing atop of the largest detached section of the Niagara Escarpment in Ontario. Known as the Milton Outlier, this 6 square km island of bedrock was separated from the main escarpment as ancient rivers carved through massive layers of sedimentary rock. The resulting erosion channel, now called the Nassagaweya Canyon, includes tributaries of the Bronte and Sixteen Mile Creeks. This lookout, known locally as Milton Heights, forms the northern part of the outlier while Rattlesnake Point is situated at the southern end. The Canyon, Crawford Lake and Hilton Falls are other prominent escarpment areas located just west of here.

Ontario's Great Wall - the Niagara Escarpment
In Ontario, the Niagara Escarpment stretches 725 km from Queenston on the Niagara River to the islands off Tobermory on the Bruce Peninsula. This ridge of limestone rock was formed more than 450 million years ago at the edge of a huge tropical sea that covered much of North America. After millions of years of erosion and the grinding action of four continental glaciers, the characteristic scarp face of the Niagara Escarpment was born.

Niagara Escarpment's most prominent geological landmarks. In 1963, Conservation Halton acquired this property to build a water management dam and reservoir on Sixteen Mile Creek and to protect the site's important natural features. Kelso Conservation Area is also a mecca for outdoor enthusiasts with swimming, boating, fishing, biking, hiking, camping, downhill skiing and snowboarding - all in beautiful natural surroundings of the Niagara Escarpment.
