1. King’s Road Bridge Marker
Inscription. An early coquina stone and wood span from which Bridge Street takes its name once extended westward across the now-filled Maria Sanchez Creek from an area under the Star General Store. Here archaeologists found the eastern footers of the bridge during the excavation of a utility line. Early maps of St. Augustine show a "crossing" at this location, probably a log road before becoming the formal bridge span in the 1700s. As the strategic West Gate to St. Augustine was once located on the Village properties, a "bridge" most likely was constructed here soon after 1572, making this crossing one of the oldest bridges in the continental United States.
