Dennis Farmhouse
view from the northwest side
You are facing the Dennis Farmhouse, built circa 1825. The house is a classic New England, timber-frame structure, an architectural style transported to the region by the original Connecticut settlers. Following the death of Perkins William "Will" Dennis (1853-1918), until 1940, the Dennis Family did not occupy the house. Then, in 1939-40, Edith Angeline Dennis (1899-1980) personally financed the renovation of the house for use as a family summer home. The renovation was "a gift" for her father, Sumner B. Dennis (1866-1950), Will Dennis' youngest brother, who was born and brought-up in the house. Among the amenities Edith A. Dennis added were tile bathrooms on the first and second floors, a modern kitchen, a screened-in porch on the north side, central heating, and dormers in four upstairs bedrooms.
[Center photo caption reads] In this photo, you see the northwest side of the house viewed from the hillside, with a glimpse of the barn complex in the left foreground, as it looked in the 19th and early 20th centuries.
[Right photo caption reads] In this photo, you see the same view of the house as it looked after the renovation. Sumner B. Dennis spent the remaining summers of his life on the farm surrounded by his wife, children, two granddaughters and friends.
