1. The Hardware Store/Wá­ḳic̣aŋye Mazop̣iye Marker

Ikce oyate kiŋ waŋhi kaptuptuġa k'a waŋhi uŋṡpa waŋ ṗe ṡni káġapi cée. Tohaŋn oyate kiŋ o'ke kiŋ tehaŋtaŋhaŋ úŋpi c̣a waŋhi uŋṡpa uŋ wiḳic̣aŋye káġapi cée.

Native people chipped Grand Meadow Chert into roughed-out ovals called "blanks." People used blanks to replenish tools as needed, when they were away from the quarry.

Archaeological sites in the region contain Grand Meadow Chert artifacts that help narrate a story from stone tool manufacture and use, to sharpening and reuse, to the eventual discard of broken tools. When people needed to make new tools the cycle started again with a journey back to the "hardware store."

Waŋhi waŋhi uŋṡpa k'a kaptuġapi ṗeṗe kiŋ hena uŋ isaŋ, waŋhiŋkpe, ṭahiŋṡpa, waŋhipaḣpe k'a nakuŋ táku tónana káġapi cée. Tohaŋn wá­ḳic̣aŋye kiŋ ṗe ṡni c̣a aḳe yumpai cée.

Blanks and flakes could be shaped into knives, arrow heads, awls, hide scrapers and other implements. When tools became dull, edges were easily reshaped.

Many finished stone tools were "hafted" or tied onto wooden shafts.

Broken, worn out tools like these are from near the Grand Meadow Chert Quarry.
