A Land and Its People: An Intricate Dance
The grand and rugged landscape of Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument influences all that lives within its boundaries. Beginning Over 10,000 years ago with the arrival of the first people, human cultures including Fremont and Anasazi (also known as Ancestral Puebloan or Hisatsinom), Hopi, Paiute, Ute, Navajo, and Euro-American found a home here, if only for a time. Each culture learned from the land and adapted differently to its terms.

Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument is a unit of the Bureau of Land Management's National Landscape Conservation System (NLCS), which protects some of the nation's most remarkable and rugged landscapes. NLCS lands will enable future generations to experience the solitude and splendor of undeveloped landscapes by providing opportunities for exploration, research, and discovery.
