1. Babbitt Baxter House Marker
Built by Colonel A.T. Babbitt in 1882, his wife Louise designed the home in the Queen Anne style. Babbitt, a former Army doctor, encouraged eastern investment in Wyoming Territory and acquired many property interests. He served briefly as the Wyoming Stock Grower's Association president before he died in 1888.
George W. Baxter then purchased the home for $9,000. Mr. Baxter was a West Point graduate who left his Army career for the cattle business. He supported women's suffrage in that role because "it was right, fair, and just." He also noted, "I did not think that members of the convention planned to deny their sisters, wives, and mothers the right to vote." In 1869, Wyoming became the first U.S. Territory to grant women the right to vote and hold public office.
The Babbitt home was placed in the National Register in the Rainsford Historic District. The home received the LeClerg Jones Award in 2021.
