Inscription. What makes Solomons Island an island? A small body of water 103' by 23' named the Tide Box allows water to ebb and flood from the creek or "The Narrows" into the river, separating the island from the mainland, thus making Solomons Island an island. This opening (from mainland to island) was over 550' wide. It has decreased in size due to a causeway and seawall constructed in 1915, replacing the old wooden bridge built in 1895 and another bridge built in 1906.
