Inscription.
This anchor has a deep connection to the Chesapeake Biological Laboratory and to the family of our founder, Dr. Reginald Truitt. The anchor was one of several belonging to generations of seafaring Truitts. Capt. Peter Truitt, Reginald Truitt's grandfather, who was a Quaker sea captain during the Civil War era, and Capt. George W. Truitt, his son and Reginald Truitt's father. Both sailed the coastal waters between Nova Scotia, Canada and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Even Dr. Truitt went to sea as a teenager sailing between New York and Chincoteague. The Truitt family were also oyster "farmers" in the Maryland coastal bays in the late 1800s and early 1900s.

Dr. Truitt brought the anchor with him when he founded CBL in 1925. For many years, the anchor stood in front of Beaven Hall near the steps leading to the pier. When Dr. Truitt retired in 1955, he took the anchor with him to his home on Kent Island. Upon his death in 1991, it passed to his children and grandchildren. The Truitt family donated it to CBL in 2019. It is emblematic of CBL mission, anchoring us to continuing our research on any aspect of the environment that
