Grand Meadow Township in Mower County, Minnesota — The American Midwest (Upper Plains)
Those Who Came Here/Ehaŋnah Tuweweka Ded Hípi?
For over four centuries, Indigenous people dug nearly 2000 pits here. Their descendants are among the Ioway, Ho Chunk/Winnebago, Lakota, and Dakota peoples.
Why did those ancestors suddenly stop coming here 600 years ago? There may have been many reasons, including climate change, disease, or other stresses. Or, because of the collapse of Cahokia, a large Indigenous city near modern-day St. Louis whose strong influence extended to villages near Wanhi Yukan. Many questions about this intriguing site remain unanswered.
