For many summers beginning in the 1950s, Dr. Dean conducted a series of first-run movies that filled the pavilion every Saturday night. The pavilion was a place for residents to meet, play cards, show first run and home movies, dance to the music of the day, and hold talent shows.
Dr. Dean's home moviestreasured by residents and families alikeare now part of the Black historical movies collection at the National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, D.C. His family members still reside in the family home at Highland Beach.
The original pavilion was designed in 1925 by Dr. John E. Washington, a notable dentist in Washington, D.C., and the author of They Knew Lincoln. The design was described as unique. It was an eight-sided wooden structure with large, screened windows. The pavilion was demolished in the 1970s due to steady beachfront erosion and structural integrity issues, after having been moved back from the beachfront years prior.
