It is the only known site in the state where black-crowned night herons, yellow-crowned night herons and great egrets nest together. During 2004, the Pennsylvania Game Commission confirmed 44 active nests. In 2005, the Kiwanis Lake [Rookery?] was listed as an Important Bird Area in Pennsylvania., All three of these birds are protected under both Federal and State laws. It is unlawful to chase, possess or kill the birds. It is also unlawful to possess, interfere with or destroy any active nest o[r] egg.
