Inscription. Zhigaagoong (Chicago) is the traditional territory of the Three Fires Confederacy: Ojibwe, Odawa, and Potawatomi, and is also home to the Miami, Illinois, Inoka, Ho-Chunk and Menominee people. Owing to its location on Mishigami (Lake Michigan) as well as its proximity to the many rivers that lead to the area, this land was the traditional meeting place for many tribes and communities and is now home to one of the largest and most diverse urban Native communities in the U.S. As we work, live and play on these territories, we must ask what we can do to right the historic wrongs of colonization and state violence, and support Indigenous communities' struggles for self-determination and sovereignty.
