Memorial stones such as these were made to flank the path of approach to tombs of eminent people in Korea. These, dressed in ceremonial court robes, hold scrolls; befitting scholar officials of the court. Oh, Ryong Suh, for whose tomb path these figures were made in 1695, was born in Yangjoo-kun Kyunggi Province, Korea, and died in 1694. As a young man he passed a government examination for high-ranking officials and advanced to the rank of Vice-Minister in the court of the Yi Dynasty (1392-1910).

A gift of the International Cultural Society of Korea and the Korean Association of Greater Philadelphia to the Fairmount Park Art Association; acquired, 1976.
