Since time immemorial, the Parianuche and Uncompahgre bands of Ute peoples traveled seasonally here to harvest the bounty of the Eagle River Valley. This area continues to remain culturally important for the Ute people.

During WWII, the elite 10th Mountain Division of the Army trained in the rugged conditions and harsh elements along the peaks and valleys within this monument. At its heyday Camp Hale encompassed 1000 buildings including barracks for more than 15,000 soldiers.

After returning home from the war, many of the 10th Mountain Division veterans used skills honed here to help establish America's skiing and outdoor recreation industry.

Today Camp Hale and the surrounding mountains provide vast opportunities for outdoor recreation.

Excerpt: Camp Hale-Continental Divide National Monument serves as a living testament to a pivotal moment in America’s military history. These peaks and valleys forged the elite soldiers of the famed 10th Mountain Division — the Army’s first and only mountain infantry division — which helped free Europe from the grip of Nazi control in World War II. The area is also foundational to preserving and interpreting the story of 10th Mountain Division veterans who, after their return from World War II, applied the skills they learned in the Camp Hale and Tenmile Range area to help establish America’s skiing and outdoor recreation industry.
