Inscription.
Throughout most of the year, the open space to the east of the main building likely functioned as a village square or plaza. Imagine elders sharing their history through stories and songs, or talking about politics. Cooking, tool making, laughing, and playing enlivened the whole village. When privacy or refuge from bad weather was needed, activities continued indoors.

Open spaces are hard to recognize archaeologically, especially in small communities. At Lowry, the main building faces east toward the Great Kiva and the plaza was in between.

The plaza (or kiisonvi) is a very important place in a community because this is where people get together and witness religious activities, social activities, and share with each other.

Excerpt:  The Lowry Pueblo National Historic Landmark is a Puebloan “Great House” that contains thirty-seven rooms, eight kivas, and one Great Kiva. Archaeologists have dated the construction and occupation of the site to 100 years in the 11th Century though there is evidence that people continued to use the site into the mid-1200s. Lowry
