Rockport in Aransas County, Texas — The American South (West South Central)
A Cattle Empire
George and Harriet Fulton started a ranching business on a huge piece of land they got from Harriet's father. George used his business skills and new ideas, like shipping chilled meat to northern markets, to change the meat-packing industry in Texas.
In 1867, the Fultons built a wharf and invited other meat-packing businesses to set up shop in their new town, Fulton, Texas. They teamed up with four other entrepreneurs from South Texas to create the Coleman-Fulton Pasture Company. At one point, this company owned over 265,000 acres of land, which is about the same size as the city of San Antonio. They also worked with the King Ranch to run the Rockport Wharf Company, which helped ship chilled meat to more places.
