1. The Village Marker
Inscription. By the 1750s, French colonists were living on family farms on the shores of Mobile Bay. One group of settlements, known as ‘The Village', was located here along on the bluffs of the eastern shore of the bay. The colonists raised cattle, pigs, and chickens, farmed corn and potatoes, and cultivated fruit trees.

In 1763 the Mobile Bay settlements became part of the new colony of British West Florida, which stretched between the Mississippi and Apalachicola Rivers along the Gulf Coast. A 1771 map shows The Village as a prominent community, with two roads leading to Pensacola and a ferry landing for crossing Mobile Bay. The Village continued to grow through the remainder of the colonial era and is recognized as the forerunner of modern Daphne.
