1. Dr. James Still Office Marker
On September 29, 2025, the New Jersey Historical Commission unveiled a marker at the Dr. James Still Office and Historic Site during the ribbon cutting ceremony for the restored building. The marker recognizes Dr. James Still, the "Black doctor of the Pines."
Inscription. Dr. James Still (1812-1882) was born to formerly enslaved parents in Washington Township, New Jersey. Dr. Still, known as the “Black Doctor of the Pines,” was also an older brother to Underground Railroad conductor and author William Still. With limited schooling, Dr. Still taught himself anatomy and naturopathic medicine, developing cures for certain forms of cancer. In 1849 he began acquiring land along Church Road. He then constructed his office building to house his essential oil distillery and herbal processing center, along with a dispensary and patient exam room. He published his autobiography, Early Recollections and Life of Dr. James Still, in 1877.
